OUR INSPIRATION
At CELLEPHORMS, we are inspired by the intricate and colourful world of biology. Our passion for science and nature drives us to create stunning art pieces that showcase the microscopic beauty of life forms. Our collection features a diverse range of biological images, from dazzling cellular structures to breathtaking botanical compositions. Each piece is testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature, meticulously captured and presented for science enthusiasts and art lovers alike. Exploring the intersection of biology, art and creativity, our mission is to inspire a deeper appreciation for the visual marvels hidden within the natural world.
OUR PROCESS
The home of CELLEPHORMS is the BIOART LAB, a purpose-built space fitted with an array of state-of-the-art microbiology, specimen processing and imaging equipment suitable for biological research. In search of the most weird and wonderful patterns in nature, we have started our own bio specimen collection, comprising a variety of fascinating organisms. Examples include terrestrial and aquatic microorganisms, plants, and insects. Many of our specimens require specialised culture conditions to survive, such as artificial growth media and controlled temperature incubators.
Some of our research specimens at the BIOART LAB are genetically programmed to produce molecular marker dyes of differing colours, helping to highlight specific cell types within complex cellular environments. Other types of molecular markers we use are derived from green fluorescent protein (GFP). Originally isolated from the jellyfish Aeqourea victoria, GFP emits green fluorescence upon exposure to UV light. We also use red, yellow, and blue derivatives of GFP. The molecular markers act as “cellular paintbrushes”, enabling the visualisation of biological forms and patterns in exquisite detail. Specimens are meticulously prepared for imaging using a process of chemical fixation, embedding and sectioning, requiring many hours to get them 100% perfect. The mesmerising artistry is captured at high resolution using advanced microscopy techniques. CELLEPHORMS is ever-evolving, responding to current topical issues in our society and will continue to explore at the interface of biology, art and technology.

FOUNDER
The Founder of CELLEPHORMS is Dr Carl Collins, a professional scientist working at the intersection of cell biology, synthetic cell systems and AI. With a life-long passion for the arts, he researches natural and artificial life forms at the cell and molecular scales, transforming living systems into bio artworks using a variety of media.

Carl received a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of Cambridge (UK), and has carried out leading edge research at top institutions in the UK and USA, including the University of Cambridge, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the University of London. He is currently based at Goldsmiths University of London working to develop the next generation of AI-driven automated systems for biological research and discovery. Carl is also Director of his own biotechnology company with a focus on cancer diagnostics and crop improvement.
